With over 40 years of international and national legal experience under his belt, Jacobo Valdez Albizu earned his law degree from the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henriquez Ureña in 1972 and is the founding member of our firm.

He is an active member of the International Trademark Association (INTA), Inter-American Association of Intellectual Property (ASIPI), and the Bar Association of the Dominican Republic. His areas of expertise lie in: Civil and Commercial Law, Litigation, Industrial Free Zones, Contracts, Foreign Investment and Intellectual Property. In addition to his native Spanish, Jacobo is fluent in French.

 

Alejandra Valdez Espaillat

Alejandra Valdez Espaillat has more than 15 years of experience in the Intellectual Property field. As the driving force of the firm’s IP practice, she has spearheaded a wide range of Intellectual Property cases (trademarks, patents, domain names and copyrights among others) of different complexity levels, establishing the firm as one of the top IP practices in the region. Constantly recognized by her peers and clients for her dedication, commitment and expertise, Alejandra has grown the department into one of the most established and highly regarded practices in the country.

Alejandra earned her law degree from the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra in 2000 and her Master’s degree (L.L.M. Intellectual Property) from Franklin Pierce Law Center, currently University of New Hampshire in 2001. She also has an L.L.M in Business Law from Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra she earned in 2006. Her areas of expertise are: Intellectual Property: Trademarks, Patents, Copyrights, Franchising, Industrial Designs, Unfair Competition, Comparative Advertising,  E-Commerce, Telecommunications, Commercial and Civil Law and Distribution Agreements.  She is an active member of the Dominican Republic Bar Association, the International Trademark Association (INTA),  Inter-American Intellectual Property Association (INTA), Asociación Nacional de Jóvenes Empresarios (ANJE)

Alejandra is trilingual as she is also fluent in English and French.

Amongst her recognitions are:

o Current Vice president of the Dominican Association of Intellectual Property (ADOPI), Alejandra was honored to be nominated and elected by her peers to represent her country's legal IP body in this prestigious organization.

o WTR1000 2016, one of the leading Intellectual Property publications and rankings, ranked Alejandra in the Silver level, agreeing that “Alejandra Valdez runs the show; “she’s excellent – very easy to work with,” say peers. “Highly qualified, when she’s on board, things always play out smoothly, even if they are litigious.” 

 

Maria Teresa Spagnuolo de Puigbó

Maria Teresa Spagnuolo de Puigbó is a long standing Associate of our firm who has been with us for since we began in 1972. She earned her degree in the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo in 1960 is an active member of the Bar Association of the Dominican Republic. Her areas of expertise are Family Law, Divorce, Adoptions, Litigations and Real Estate Law.

Maria Teresa is trilingual as she is fluent in English and Portuguese as well.

 

Marcos Ricardo Álvarez Gómez

Marcos Ricardo Álvarez Gómez is an Associate of our firm since 1998. He earned his law degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo in 1970 and among his accomplishments is standing as Judge of the Court of Appeals of the Dominican Republic since 1991 to 1998. His areas of expertise are Civil and Commercial Law, Labor Law, Litigations, Contracts and Tax Law.

Marcos Ricardo is also fluent in English and French.

Dharma Fernández Brea

Dharma Fernández Brea has been an integral part of the Valdez Albizu team since 2012. She has since executed in civil matters while making Intellectual Property her main focal point. She earned her law degree from the  Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 2012 and immediately proceeded to earn her Master’s Degree in Civil Law from the same institution.

Additionally, Dharma has completed multiple seminars and has earned a series of certifications in Civil Law, Civil Responsibility, Intellectual Property, Consumer Law, Litigation Techniques, as well as Constitutional Law and Contracts.

Dharma is trilingual, aside from her native Spanish, she also speaks English and French.

 

Diana Isabel Abreu Matos

A veteran of Intellectual Property Law for over seven years, Diana Abreu Matos has been a key player at Valdez Albizu since 2009. Diana earned her law degree at the Universidad Iberoameriana in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and subsequently went on to earn her International Master of Laws (LLM) and MBA in IE Law School, Instituto Empresa, in Madrid in 2014.

Diana also has a Certification in European Law from the IE Center of European Studies and a Certification in Intellectual Property from the World Intellectual Property Organization as part of her expertise.

Diana is fluent in English as well.
